Kim Pearce will never forget the first time she saw a short clip about an impoverished group of Paraguayan youths who played instruments made from nearby landfill, ‘My heart burst open, I just felt that they had something to teach me, some sort of message on how people can transform their adversity through creativity’. Fast forward two years, Kim and her best friend Kath are now publicly screening Landfill Harmonic, the feature length film that follows the incredible journey of the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan musical group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage.

Kath and Kim (yes, really!) are the co-founders of The Possibility Project, a social enterprise dedicated to nurturing greater social justice for all communities. Their work with slum dwellers in India draws obvious connections to the spirited communities in Paraguay, as Kath says ‘this is what social justice is all about, promoting what we have in common with each other as human beings, rather than focussing on our differences’.

The Possibility Project is all about creating engagements where individuals are able to recognise their own power. As Kim says, “Landfill Harmonic shows so clearly that regardless of income, race, gender and religion, all human beings are capable of making extraordinary choices to rise above adversity. Our biggest social justice issue in Australia is the rise of mental distress, The Possibility Project hopes that when people watch this film it will empower them into seeing things differently, especially their adversities.

The girls are making their way from Sydney up to Wanderlust Sunshine Coast and are thrilled to be doing a public screening of Landfill Harmonic at The Space, Byron Bay on Sunday 16th October. 6.30pm. Tickets are only $15 each and available through this TryBooking link. All proceeds help to fund their social justice work. The event is part of Mental Health Month NSW.
