The culturally creative team at Kulchajam have reignited the Peddle and Hawk Acacia St markets, which are returning with the closure of Acacia St in Byron’s Arts and Industry Estate on Easter Saturday.

The Kulchajam team are inviting the community to  start ‘peddling and hawking’ in a retro future street market.

“We were inspired by Asian street markets where everyone has something to peddle or hawk. Our first event saw kids as young as five selling their wares alongside established fashonitas and artisans,” says Kulchajam creative director Techa Beaumont.  “‘Peddle and Hawk’ brings together the diversity of the region, from artists, fashionistas and jewellery makers to hilltop gardeners, vintage collectors and upcycled arts. Expect everything from children selling ginger bread cookies to high end artisans and exotic street foods.”

The market closes a section of Acacia St in collaboration with surrounding businesses that range from performing arts and yoga studios to functional art galleries, fashion and jewellery, composting, upcycling and organics.

The day provides opportunities for all creatives and entrepreneurs. Stalls range from small suitcase and blanket stalls to marquees in and around local businesses and on the road verges.

A full program from 9am-3pm includes music, yoga, street foods, workshops and presentations from marketeers and participating galleries and studios.  Says Techa: “Games and installations and circus toys replace traffic on the road, making  this an interactive and dynamic event that enlivens and reclaims our public spaces.”

A range of participating businesses including the Lume Functional Art Gallery, Heartspace, Jing Organics, the Candle Library, Stay at Home Gypsy, the Juggle Hut and more.

Byron Bay’s arts industrial estate will come alive on the 30th of May with a creative mini market in Acacia Street, with over 30 stalls of local arts, crafts, up-cycled, re-cycled – and who knows even bi-cycles for sale…

The new monthly market, Peddle & Hawk takes place across a number of art galleries and studios on Acacia Street,  and will operate on the last Saturday of every month.  As well as the stalls with their vintage, home-grown and home-made produce and wares, there will be entertainment from local musicians, live art, children’s activities, art workshops and an open day for surrounding galleries.
“Were inviting local artists, entrepreneurs, creators, gardeners, and foodies to be a part of a dynamic and accessible ‘small stall’ marketplace,” says event curator Techa Beaumont. “Plus Kulchajam’s food cooperative will be open to encourage people to try all the amazing local produce we stock.”
Supporting local community enterprise is something that comes naturally to local event curators and social entrepreneurs Techa Beaumont and Alice Moffett who are hosting the community event which was launched to coincide with the second birthday of the CO*OP Kulcha food cooperative,  which enables co-op members to sell produce from their gardens and kitchens.
“People everywhere are creating and making things themselves and just need a supportive platform to get noticed,” says Alice Moffett. “We think Peddle & Hawk is just the place for creatives to  get started, meet one another and enjoy the opportunity to sell locally” said Alice.
Riding the wave of the mini-market, suitcase rummage movement, Peddle & Hawk will operate from 10am-3pm with a range of treats and street foods and special offerings of organic masala dosas, raw treats and special cold brew coffee from the Barefoot Roaster.

Those interested in holding a stall must pre-register at: kulchajam.org/civicrm/event/info
