Natalie Barovsky – aka the photographer Natsky – has taken the bold step of opening Lismore’s first dedicated photography gallery, Fox Photo Den.

“The idea was a bit of a risk,” says Natksy, “but judging by the support it was one well worth taking.”  Almost 300 people gathered at the old Hurford’s Hardware building to celebrate the opening.  With live music by Deana & Julia, wine and food, and of course the wonderful array of images on the walls, it was a night to remember.

“We’ve already got photographers putting images together for the next exhibition in four weeks time,” Natsky says.

On show were images by Denise Alison of the fabulous Humans of Lismore (facebook.com/Humansoflismore) , the Northern River’s favourite landscape photographer Alex Clarke, the artistic nudes of Cloud Nine’s Simon Fraser, amazing wildlife photography by Meg Gordon, a rare dabble with a holga camera by local artist Michael ‘Whitey’ White and flora details by Natsky herself.

“There are so many amazing images out there trapped on hard drives that are never being seen. Exhibiting is expensive so at the Den I am trying to minimise those costs for photographers and help them to get their work out there. It is also the reason the Den wont’ – I repeat won’t – be charging commission on sales. It’s the photographer’s work, so they should be rewarded for it in full,” says Natsky, who is both  owner and operator of the Den.

Natksy fully intends that The Den will be evolving over time with much more photography based events planned over the coming months. “Think studio, workshops, darkroom, events and much more,” she says. “It will only happen if the people want it though, so people need to get involved, either as a photographer or somebody who loves beautiful imagery.”

So next time you’re in Lismore, make sure you take a wander through the Northern Rivers latest art  space.

Alex Clarke has been one of Verandah Magazine’s favourite landscape photographers this year, so it’s only right that we point out that many of his beautiful images from the Northern Rivers – and elsewhere – are available as a 2016 calendar.

“Storm season is the defining characteristic of the subtropical climate that we enjoy in the northern rivers,” says Clarke. “Storm cells can be severe and damaging, but are also intensely beautiful forces of nature that can inspire awe and respect for the natural world.”  Clarke captured the heart of this cell in October as it swept through Bentley at over 100 km/h on its way towards the coast. This and 11 other beautiful images landscape are featured in his 2016 calendar, available at PowerMax Computers in Magellan Street in Lismore, or from his Red Bubble store at https://www.redbubble.com/people/aclarke/calendars/17542530-landscape

Alex Clarke nabbed Verandah Magazine’s Shot of the Week, which officially marks the beginning of the festive season, with this great photo of Lismore’s quirky Christmas tree, made entirely from old bikes.

The tree was created by Council’s executive committee, which decided Council should give the Lismore community a gift for Christmas. The new tree is made from old bikes, which would otherwise have ended up as scrap metal. The Council welded the bikes onto the steel frame at the Council metal shop and the structure was then painted by Council staff and their families, in their own time.

Lismore-based photographer Alex Clarke was vsiting a friend on a property near Lismore recently when this Black-Faced Cuckoo Shrike fledgling raised his head.   “The northern rivers is blessed with an incredible diversity of plentiful bird life – even in urbanised areas,” he says.  “I was at my friend’s to catch a view of a wedge-tailed eagle’s nest – complete with fluffy white chick – when this bold little chap hopped up to me and did his best to scare me off, and so, of course, I had to take a photo!”
Alex snapped the cuckoo fledgling with a Sony A7RII and Voigtländer 180mm f/4 APO at f/4 and 1/60 second exposure.

Photographer Alex Clarke and his partner Jasmine have a family tradition for the Queens birthday long weekend.  “We love to head out west for a night or two,” he says, of Verandah Magazine’s Shot of the Week.  “The Tablelands have a very different climate to the coastal plain, and it’ss refreshing to immerse yourself in the chill clear air, even if it’s just for a couple of days. The winter light is incredible, and exploring the plains and mountains with a camera is one of my favourite activities. Dusk goes so quickly, but creates a sublime and surreal beauty across the landscape I love.”  Sublime and sureal beauty just about sums up this great Shot of the Week.

This HDR shot was created with a Sony A7II through a Canon 50mm lens at f/4.

Photographer Alex Clarke, who is one of  Verandah Magazine’s regular Shot of the Week contributors, has a number of favourite spots in the Northern Rivers for shooting, and one of them is the Wreck carpark in Byron.  “I love photographing near the Wreck,” he says.  “The waves, the light, the clouds – they’re all ever-changing.  It’s the endless variety that makes it such a blissful spot for photography for me.  And then on this particular Sunday afternoon this surfer managed to ride past at exactly the right moment.”

Clarke took this shot with a Sony A7, with a Voitglander APO Lanthar with a 180mm lens at f4.0

'Core' by Alex Clarke

It was stormy weather across the Northern Rivers last week. Alex Clarke took this beauty after he and his partner Jasmine decided a change of scenery was in order after a long day at work. “We grabbed our cameras, headed west from Lismore towards the ominous clouds that were gradually blotting out the sun as it dipped towards the horizon,” he says.  “We followed the backroads until we were confronted by this awesome spectacle of the core of a storm cell, as it began to unleash a torrent of rain.”

Summer in the Northern Rivers means warmth, humidity and the odd spot of rain.  After a bit of a dry spell, the skies opened in December and photographer Alex Clarke was inspired to take his camera out for a walk around the neighbourhood. “I wanted to see if I could capture some sense of the relief the vegetation must be feeling,” he says. “Red flowering gums have such spectacular flowers, and this young tree in a neighbour’s yard was all but singing with joy in the downpour.”

Clarke took his photograph of Corymbia ficifolia flowers through his new Zeiss Makro Planar 100mm f/2.0, on the Sony A7. (“Probably the nicest lens I’ve ever owned,” he says.)

Photographer Alex Clarke was at home when the temperature started heading towards 40°C. “I noticed a few storm cells popping up on the western horizon from Lismore,” he says, “which put them well out over the Richmond Range or Clarence valley. Hoping to capture a cell or even a supercell, I jumped in my trusty Peugeot and headed out to Mallanganee to get a better look. I took a few photos at various spots along the top of the range and then headed down to the range on my way back to Lismore. This derelict house at Mongongarie has long been one of my favourite subjects – it’s in a very picturesque spot and on this particular day it was possible to create this framing as a massive cell was just reaching its peak to the north east.”

Clarke shot his photo on a Sony A7 with 50mm Contax G Zeiss (adapted manual focus) lens at f5.6.  HDR shot with 3 exposures merged using Nik HDR Efex Pro in Apple Aperture.
