Suvira MacDonald had often thought sculpture was under-represented in the Shire – so he decided to do something about it.  This Saturday, Creative Mullumbimby launches the Sculpture Walk in Palm Park from 10.00am.

“I thought about what we could do about it,” says MacDonald, “and I realised that the existing cycleway and footpath were an ideal setting for scultpure.  So we set out to create site specific works that would also reflect the history and contemporary culture of Mullum.”

A longer-term plan sees the sculpture park itself expand into a circuit, as part of a trail around the town.  “Art is always an ongoing story,” says MacDonald, “and I believe people will embrace the sculpture park, and its future development.”

It shifts the balance of the town westward towards the river and creates an interesting new texture to the town that showcases the odd, eccentric nature of the local community, particularly the large artistic community. I believe it is an important new way of telling the natural and cultural stories of the town and region.

The Chamber of Commerce will be running their pick up sticks competition from 10.00amand launching their new photo comp. From 10.30am the Song Dynasty choir will perform, and the Mullumbimby Scouts will demonstrate a freestanding rope bridge. Mayor Simon Richardson will MC.
