Linda Frylink is nothing if not adventurous – she’s sailed around the world, published a memoir, and now she and her husband are living off the grid at Larnook, and Linda is running art classes in Lismore.
Where do I begin? Not at the beginning as it would take too long. More than 30 years ago my soul mate, best friend and adventurous husband Bill, otherwise known as Captain Underpants (you have to read the book) planted the seed to sail around the world. Careers, children and mortgages got in the way of the dream but we eventually built a yacht and did circumnavigate the globe returning to home shores in November 2009.
Along the way I captured what I saw with my pastels and pens. Apart from travel, drawing is my passion. My memoir Sailing in my Sarong was published in November 2010 and includes my art and photographs. Many presentations and festivals later I have made many friends around the globe through my book, now in its 5th edition.
At the end of 2015, we decided the Sunshine Coast was getting too busy and found our haven near Larnook, north of Lismore. Living in the bush off the grid with no visible neighbours is just like living on a boat. Instead of being on anchor in a beautiful harbour we are surrounded by rainforest, wildlife and views of Mt Warning. The bonus is we both have a shed to pursue our passions. In addition to drawing I am creating whimsical mosaic mirrors from vintage jewellery, china, glass and collectibles in ‘pique assiette’ style. (French for broken plate). I was at the Channon Market one day selling my art when Lydia Kindred approached me about exhibiting my work in a new Community Art Space in Lismore. When I first saw the beautiful light filled rooms upstairs in one of Lismore’s oldest buildings, I thought it would be ideal for drawing.
